So I remember being here a week ago and thinking that I had something awesome to blog about. And I even vaguely recall a photo. ooh ohh I remember. But I'm not as excited about it anymore (after a week) and probably will never post the very cool photo of me doing the price is right flourish. But the old exciting news was that work got a way cool new coffee machine that has the press button instant cappucino or whatever you feel like - hot chocolate in my case. But then work put a huge dampener on things by saying that you have to pay for it in the un-subtly placed "donation" box. Ah well that what you get for working for the public sector.
Anyway this week's exciting news still relates to work cuz my mind is still there. Background: I and my nurse housemate are the two unlucky people who get to order all of the clinical stores for the hospital. This means whenever anyone has any annoyance with stock related products or sometimes even pharmacy or pathology (which isn't my area, I keep trying to tell them) they come to us and whinge about the state of the health system, the world, their life whatever.
But this week I had two big successes on the stores front. I have been trying to do this for months and finally it is all coming together. We have just recieved two brand new tympanic (super fast) thermometers. Valued at a not so cool $200 each which makes a big dent in the monthly stores budget - ah well. And just today I have arranged to have 4 new, just on the market, glucometers (blood sugar taking machines) for the grand total price of $0!!!! I am super good. Somehow you can swap ur old crappy machine for new ones from the same company for free. So yay! We will finally have enough glucometers to put one in each area rather than walking half way across the hospital to get one. {For those of you only accainted with large city hospitals, walking across my hospital takes 1-2 minutes each way, but still a waste of time when we are usually pretty busy).
And in similar news, I decided/realised today that I really do enjoy my job. I love the people I work with. I like meeting new people and getting to know them and being nice to them. (I was the extra mile nurse today and yesterday getting all sorts of helpful things like new wheelie walkers and medication education at the speed of lightning.) And while I don't enjoy the gross and nasty things of my job, if they aren't to frequent I can cope with them.
Its funny when you see yourself or not yourself in patients. ie what you want to be and what you DON'T want to be. Today we looked after 2 patients. One who is the epitome of what you would want your health to be at the grand age of 96!!! And one who was the perfect example of what an unhealthy life does for you once you hit 60. I asked this 96yr old who is still living by herself in her home, walking, continent (a big thing at that age), self caring and mentally sharp, what her secret was. She said she had no secret and it just happened. Its nice to hear blatant honesty without pretention. She a great lady though and while she will probably be discharged before I am back at work, I had fun meeting her and helping make her stay in hospital a bit less awful. (NOTE: Hospitals aren't nice places to be. Not cuz of any human factor but just cuz they are nothing like a home)
Anyway I am gonna go, I'm going to see a movie with my brother. It will be interesting to see if we can both enjoy the same movie. I reckon we have a shot.

You can't go past the hilarious-ness of Darwin Awards
This man was in an accident at work, so he filled out an insurance claim. The insurance company contacted him and asked for more information.
This was his response: "I am writing in response to your request for additional information, for block number 3 of the accident reporting form. I put 'poor planning' as the cause of my accident. You said in your letter that I should explain more fully and I trust the following detail will be sufficient. I am an amateur radio operator and onthe day of the accident, I was working alone on the top section of my new 80-foot tower. When I had completed my work, I discovered that I had, over the course of several trips up the tower, brought up about 300 pounds of tools and spare hardware. Rather than carry the now unneeded tools and material down by hand, I decided to lower the items down in a small barrel by using the pulley attached to the gin pole at the top of the tower. Securing the rope at ground level, I went to the top of the tower and loaded the tools and material into the barrel. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it tightly to ensure a slow decent of the 300 pounds of tools." "You will note in block number 11 of the accident reporting form that I weigh only 155 pounds. Due to my surprise of being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rather rapid rate of speed up the side of the tower. In the vicinity ofthe 40-foot level, I met the barrel coming down. This explains my fractured skull and broken collarbone. Slowed only slightly,I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately, by this time, I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold onto the rope in spite of my pain. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of tools hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel." "Devoid of the weight of the tools, the barrel now weighed approximately 20 pounds. I refer you again to my weight in block number 11. As you might imagine, I began a rapid descent down the side of the tower. In the vicinity of the 40-foot level, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles, and the lacerations of my legs and lower body. The encounter with the barrel slowed me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell onto the pile of tools and, fortunately, only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, that as I lay there on the tools, in pain, unable to stand and watching the empty barrel 80 feet above me, I again lost my presence of mind.I let go of the rope..."

Asbestos, Blood and Funerals
So its been a bit of a big week. I had my first night duties as the only RN in the hospital. I was a little apprehensive but I got through. One of our patients who has been in hospital for a while with end stage cancer passed away on my first night duty. It was pretty sad and a bit stressful cuz I was in charge and had to make the decisions but we got there.
To add to the busy-ness of work, we currently are getting the asbestos removed from the hospital roof so we have to close off parts of the hospital and move whats there in to the rest of the hospital. And then every few days we have to move stuff back and empty out another part of the hospital. It makes it hard to find stuff cuz just when you learn where the new hiding place for stuff is, then it moves.
But in some fun work news, I have gotten to take so many blood tests this week that I think my career could almost double as a vampire. I am getting better at getting the veins but I still missed about a third of the veins I tried to stick. Lots of added pain for more poor patients but such is the price of education.
Thats all for me. If ur related to me, comment - cuz chances are, I havent talked to you for a while. ie BEC!

New Blogger
I know it's been around in different forms for over a year. I know its probably not the spawn of satan. But I didn't want to get the new blogger. I liked the old one. And I kinda (for once) wanted to not just go with the crowd and get the newest version of useless technology (my brother won't let me put windows live messenger on the computer and I am sad). But then they wouldn't let me sign in to old blogger. So I had a choice to continue my protest and buckle and continue my blog. I chose to talk to imaginary people in the vain hope that they read and comment. Weak!!
Anywho, I was gonna be home on a friday night and I had nothing to do and didn't have to go to work until the next night. So I drove 3 1/2 hours to go hang with my friends. I have to drive back 3 1/2 hours today (saturday). It was such a great decision and I had the best time. I love when I make the right but seemingly wrong decision and I get to reap the benefits. Another recent excellent decision that was right and I would have regretted having not made it ... making sure that Chloe got to come to Canada with me! Best decisions I ever made.
And in related news, CHLOE'S COMING HOME!!!!!! ON TUESDAY!!!! SOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!
I can't wait!

Little town makes the big time

I am very proud to announce that the Melon Festival held this last week in my little town has made worldwide news! And I thought Al Jazeera was typically used to broadcast threatning videos but look !!! I actually had a really great time at melon fest and even went on a float in the parade. It turns out I am not the best aim when throwing lollies to the crowd. They usually landed only 10cm away from the float. I am yet to find out if our float won any prizes in its category. We dressed up paper mache watermelons to look like hospital related people - Nurse Melon, Doctor Melon, Grandma and Grandpa Melon and Sadie the Cleaning Lady Melon to name a few. Surprisingly, the little town puts on a pretty good show for the week and I was impress with how much fun I had and would have had if I didnt have to go to work in the afternoon. (I missed seeing the melon smashing record.) But happily, I didnt manage to leave work just as all the exceedingly drunk people were starting to come in. And I discovered what an alcohol coma looks like - not pretty.

This is the view from Bec's front door. See those mountains - waking up to that view is incredible. At least on the occasional day when it isn't raining.

The View from the tope of the Space Needle. It doesn't get much better than that!!

Apparently Chloe thinks 'Why be normal when you can be crazy?'

The view on the other side, equally impressive but harder to look at face on due to stunning blindingness.

This is one of my favourite photos. He named it 'Me and the mountains'.

The Seattle Space Needle. A very impressive structure indeed.

That random stranger again just following us wherever we went.
I liked these starfish. They remind me of Spongebob Squarepants when they flash to real life stuff.
I am way too knowledgable about that show.
More cool sea creatures. I like the purple ones!
